The cover art reminds me of a low budget sci-fi movie like "Attack of the Giant Killer Ants" or something similar. And having a scientist that hates Vulcans seems a bit silly to me. It was only done to provide Spock with some sort of conflict. A very typical example of early Star Trek novels.
