I had a very bad feeling when I first discovered this new series of novels. I thought they'd ignore the main Trek characters and only focus on the secondary characters, but, thankfully, that's not what they did. I enjoyed this story, but I must tell you this: the teaser on the back of the book is almost completely wrong! McCoy doesn't disappear, only Kirk does, and it's not in a transporter accident, but in an alien device they don't understand. Also, Chief Giotto and Kyle aren't even in this novel! It's amazing that Pocket Books allowed this to happen. Someone screwed up! Anyway, this is the beginning of an interesting story that takes us into a future where the Gorn rule and no one has heard of James T. Kirk!
